Description
A stunning late Victorian (c1900) copper and brass tobacco jar with classical, pre-Raphaelite style scenes of cloaked maidens, angels, learned elders, kneeling and reclining figures all cast in sharp relief in copper on top of a solid brass body. The jar has a turned brass base with bead stringing supporting the main body with relief scenes above which rests a hinged brass and copper lid, the latter with scrolled and foliate copper reliefs above which stands a cherub and shield finial. The weight and fine detailing indicate a piece of high quality with a makers’ mark of ‘HB’ engraved on the base. Measures 28.5cm high and 16cm at its widest point.
