Description
A stunning pair of rare Burmantofts faience vases by Joseph Walmsley, each featuring a cylindrical neck incised with vertical motifs flanked by two scroll handles above a globular body and circular foot. The main body is tubelined and incised with pictures of opposing crows grasping snakes with their talons, within a surround of Persian style flowers against a terracotta coloured ground. Impressed and painted factory marks to bases include “BURMANTOFTS FAIENCE”, “COL. NO. 125” and shape number “2062” to bases.
A single example of this vase is recorded on P65 of Jason Wigglesworth’s reference book “Burmantofts Faience – a compendium of designs”.
Condition Report
Excellent – no chips, cracks or restoration. Fine, age-related crazing under illuminated magnification.
