Description
A large and impressive WMF figural dish with opposing twin trays featuring whiplash decoration and described in the WMF reference catalogue as a fruit or sweet dish. This iconic Art Nouveau piece features a seated maiden (in the classical style) staring intently at a bird perched on her forearm, with scrolling 2-tone ivy and berry decoration cascading downwards to merge with similar decoration between the 2 dishes. The dish is capped at both ends with whiplash handles and stamped with the model number 429 and impressed WMF marks (Ostrich Lozenge, B, I/O, OX). Measures 44.5cm wide, 22cm deep and 27cm tall. The dish is displayed on page 51 of the definitive WMF reference guide: ‘Art Nouveau Domestic Metalwork: From Wurttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik, 1906’.
