A beautiful pair of Wedgwood Red Lustre Malfrey Pots and Covers decorated with the celestial dragon and sacred pearl with flames motif on a ruby red ground. Gilded chequerboard border around the rim and foot with mother of pearl interior and stylized floral border around the inside rim. The inner pot lids are each painted with a single butterfly. Each pot is marked with the Wedgwood 'Portland vase' maker's mark, 'WEDGWOOD ENGLAND' and pattern number Z4827 to underside.
Very good condition – no chips, cracks or restoration. The gilding is in excellent condition with only very slight rubbing, mostly on one of the pot lid motifs. There are couple of tiny glazing flaws and signs of wear (milky white marks) to the ruby exterior ground on both vases commensurate with age and use (see pictures). This seems to be a common issue to this type of ground as other Wedgwood red lusterware items I have seen over the years have similar markings.
