A large and impressive Art Deco spelter sculpture of a gull (probably an albatross) in swooping flight above a stylised wave on a beautiful, double-layer mottled marble plinth with separate multi-coloured marble front. The gull has a lovely patinated bronze effect finish and is attached to a ‘crashing’, turquoise coloured wave via a simple male/female metal connection. The wave attaches to the marble base via 2 sliding metal bars on the marble surface into recesses on the wave’s base. This is not a great system as the wave is easily detached when handled but nevertheless is perfectly stable once in situ. Hence the piece comes in 3 pieces for ease of transport but please note it is exceedingly heavy.
Excellent – lovely consistent patination with a small loss on the gull’s underbelly and overall minor signs of wear consistent with age. The marble base has a small chip on the right-hand side at the bottom (see photo) and a few other tiny nibbles but otherwise is in remarkably good condition.
